You Are What You Eat : How Food Affects Your Mental Well-Being

We often associate ‘Well-being’ or ‘Wellness’ with the absence of diseases alone. But much like we might be right saying so, well-being encompasses a complex blend of an individual’s physical, psychological, social, financial and emotional aspects. It is widely linked to how a person leads a happy and satisfying lifestyle, and that’s why Gallup makes sure it does its analysis across the 47 states every year.

Diet for your mental Well-being

Over the recent past, the global food sector has profoundly evolved, bringing in a host of changes that dictate what and how we perceive food and what not to eat. Without a doubt, the emanating habitual changes have significantly impacted our physical health and more importantly a person’s well-being. As a matter of concern, food manufacturers are marketing their products in line with the consumer’s need for a dish that boosts his or her well-being.

In fact, research shows that mental ills like depression and dementia are considerably influenced by what we consume throughout our lives. The statistics are seemingly correct if we are to look at countries doing fairly well and what food their people identify themselves with. China, Japan, Norway, Spain and the United States are some of the countries where advocating for healthy eating habits is quite vocals. And, coincidentally, these same countries have perhaps the lowest cases of depression.

It doesn’t mean that psychological wellness depends on what one eats only. But it is the case of this only variable boldly becoming apparent, especially when the results are tabulated against states where consumption of unhealthy foods is rife. And if it affects mental wellness then it inherently does have an impact on a person’s overall well-being.

Other factors that also contribute to mental wellness

It is true that exhibiting an impressive level of well-being boils down to everything aforementioned working well. But much like what you eat affects how well your body will be, it’s important to mention the other different and supplement aspects.

They include the following:

  • A happy intimate relationship
  • A strong network of friends
  • A wholly enjoyable and fulfilling career
  • Being financially stable
  • Regular workout
  • Enough sleep
  • Realistic and achievable goals
  • Good health
  • A fair and democratic society

Final thoughts

From afar, it looks like general well-being of a person isn’t achieved by being well in just one aspect. Though it is a cohort of interrelated factors that work together to make one happy, safe and free, well-being can be elusive, and that’s why it is important to culture a mind that sees everything in life positively. Wealth alone isn’t the key, although many often think so. And, when all’s said and done, use what you eat to fortify your wellbeing.
